Will there be another Fantastic Beasts movie?

Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets is the third Fantastic Beasts movie, but will there be another Fantastic Beasts movie? The first film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, was generally well received by critics and audiences and grossed over $800 million at the global box office. It naturally required the sequel to go into production immediately. The second film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was less successful. The sequel grossed around $150 million at the box office and is currently the lowest-rated film in the Wizarding World franchise on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. However, a third film was put into production by Warner Bros. with Yates returning to direct, that means Fantastic Beasts 3 will make/break the franchise. A third film was released in April 2022 and cast doubt on the franchise’s chances of lasting the planned five films.

So, will there be another Fantastic Beasts movie? Unfortunately, Fantastic Beasts is unlikely to see another film released to follow Dumbledore’s Secrets. Despite the lackluster response to the second and third films, there are glimpses of the greatness this franchise could achieve if Warner Bros. respects the initial plan of a trilogy. However, there are several reasons why Fantastic Beasts 3 will end the series and likely be the last adventure in the wizarding world for a long time.

Why Fantastic Beasts 3 is probably the last

The answer to “will there be another Fantastic Beasts movie?” is confusing. The first major problem of the series was the continued decline in box office returns. Warner Bros. insisted on greenlighting the final two installments only if the critical and commercial reception of Fantastic Beasts 3 was deemed successful. This is not good as Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’s worldwide gross is around $396 million. It was a significantly lower yield than The Crimes of Grindelwald and holds the lowest opening weekend gross of any film in the Wizarding World, and the lowest worldwide total by a large margin. Also, with a budget of $200 million, the film probably didn’t break even considering marketing costs.

Furthermore, Fantastic Beasts 2 and Fantastic Beasts 3 received similar reviews. Although many considered it to be a slight improvement over its predecessor, criticism of its convoluted plot, unnecessary filler material, and seemingly low stakes made the film the second most criticized film, behind only The Crimes of Grindelwald. Also, the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard lawsuit controversy certainly didn’t help the film. Although many critics agree that Mads Mikkelsen’s performance is an improvement over Depp’s, the controversy surrounding Depp’s situation and lawsuit was only a hindrance to the production.

Along with Warner Bros. who greenlit the second and third installments in 2016, even before Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was released, the fact that the latter two films have not yet begun production is a concern. It is likely that Warner Bros. saw a lackluster response to the film in the critical and commercial worlds and brought the franchise to a halt. It remains to be seen if the film will see a recovery in sales when it is released at home. However, it is safe to assume, given the response to the film and the lack of response from Warner Bros., that Fantastic Beasts 3 may be the last film in the Wizarding World franchise.

The entire Harry Potter franchise is controversial today

Over the past few years, the entire Harry Potter franchise has faced a lot of controversy. JK Rowling has received some legitimate heat about her views on transgender rights, especially after she took to Twitter to rehash her arguably hateful views. Ezra Miller, who plays Credence Barebone/Aurelius Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts, is being investigated for the attack. Johnny Depp’s defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard finally ended, but not before Mads Mikkelsen re-founded it. Finally, on top of all this, complaints from the developers of the new game Hogwarts Legacy proved that they were forced into difficult working conditions. In general, the Harry Potter franchise has generated controversy upon controversy. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’s poor reviews only add fuel to the fire and make the continuation of the franchise uncertain. David Yates is set to direct something else, which could mean the proverbial nail in the coffin. Honestly, it might be better for the Harry Potter franchise as a whole if a clean break is made and the Wizarding World isn’t revisited for a while.
