Since 2008the Manche Department and the Communities of Communes are fighting the FDGDON (Departmental Federation of Defense Groups against Harmful Organisms) of the Manche against two invasive species : them nutria imported from South America and muskrats originated from North America.

1,718 trappers mobilized

In 1eh November 202247,447 nutria and muskrats were captured last year in sleeve.

This is the second strongest year after last year when we were at 48,523. By 2020, we will be at 35,000. For 2022, it is more or less stabilized, admittedly at a high level.

There are a total of 1,718 traps work daily in the English Channel to capture these species using cages. “Anyone can become a trapper from the moment they contact us. And trapping is allowed throughout the year. We have a great dynamic” but other goodwill is welcome.

“The search is a constraint every day before noon because if another species is trapped, it has to be released. You have to be available,” explained Antoine Métayer.

These species are caused by ” damage of three orders: agricultural (because they mainly eat vegetable crops or cereals – In the Pays de la Loire, in the meadow-marsh area, they estimate the damage at €30 per year per animal), environment (degradation of river banks, with impact on native flora and fauna) and public health. In fact, they can send serious illnesssuch as leptospirosis or echinococcosis.

They can be carriers of post-mortem disease.

“More than half of muskrats and coypus are carriers of leptospirosis in particular. He is the most widespread. And the third is excretory, so the disease can spread. » Farm animals, pets and people can be contaminated. It can go up to dead if the case is not taken in time.

It is therefore important to evacuate the corpses with a view to their rendering. So, 75 collection sites is planned on the English Channel. The ton “harvested” in our department on 1eh November 2022 is impressive: “112 tons. Just two less than last year. This is due to the mobilization of the traps”, greeted the director of FDGDON.

“The actions are eligible for 100% of the municipalities in the Channel, because through their Communities of municipalities (the eight participate financially in the program), they are all committed now”, informs Antoine Metayer.
